My Chocolate Cake Book

It's my cousin's 21st birthday. I have been baking his birthday cake since 3 years ago for his birthday parties. This time we thought of making it special for him by having a surprise party and I really wanted to make him something special, and fun of course.

At first I thought of making him a PS or something he wish to get... but lucky kid, he has everything he wants. Almost. Sis suggested a book and I thought it's a good idea! So we investigated with the birthday boy's younger sister on the subjects he's studying now and here's one of the chapters.

Made the book from one block of square cake, only needed to separate the two pieces by having a slightly slanting cut in the centre, flip over one of the pieces and trim the edges to become slight rounded. Not much wastage of cake which I really like, it's a pity to be throwing away cakes just because we need to achieve the shape (yeah, alternatively of course we can have all those "by product" for tea). Sis was the "writer" of this book and the contents are all valid contents!

Lightly cut out the shape of the pages with the pizza cutter and made some bookmarks for the book. Painted the book "cover" blue.

A pencil which was place loosely on the book so this can be kept as decorative item. But too bad, the kids broke the pencil and they ate it too.

Some complicated formulas and graphs...

The highlighter, which is more of the older design I suppose. I haven't been using highlighter and didn't have one at home, had to text cousin sis to get "contents" for the highlighter.

I always like studying while enjoying some snacks, and coffee was such a must during my school days. I didn't attempt to make a big mug, made a small one - for espresso! And a little cupcake (it's not a real cupcake).

Those on the cupcake are supposed to be chocolate stick, chocolate decorative item and a piece of marshmallow with chocolate drizzle (not "real" but edible, made of fondant).

The eraser, which was the easiest to make.

Fondant covered cake board which I tried to give a look of a wooden study desk. And it's very handy for sticking candles on.

Sis took cousin bro out to get lunch while we gotten the cake ready at home. The first reaction of the birthday boy besides being surprised was "eh, how come there's a book on the table?!" :)
It took cousin bro a long while before he finally cut into the cake... Here we were, eating the pages of the book. Haha...

Cross section - moist chocolate cake with milk chocolate icing (sandwich and cover).

Algebra anyone?

Alex's actual birthday is on this coming Thursday, happy birthday bro! Study hard :p

23 Years of Marriage

Happy anniversary to Izrin and Jaah! 23 years of marriage, 3 beautiful (and handsome) kids, successful career and business... I wish I have such achievement in life!

Made a walnut, dates and banana cake, wrapped up as a present, tied with violet ribbons and bow. Made a little card which is attached to the present.

Fondant covered cake board which allows me to write my message outside the cake. Two little rose buds to add some colours.

This is where fairy tale continues after the "happily ever after" wedding do. :)

Chocolate Cake making appearance at Gym

Thanks Nick for ordering this cake, I had a lot of fun making the toppers and this reminds me that I've not been to a pump class for ages...

Here is the step board, and 7.5kg of weights, for the erm... back track.

Don't forget to get a mat...

A set of dumbbells if you don't want to use plates for your shoulder workout.

Drink lots of water (my favorite item on the cake, this water bottle, heh) and don't forget your towel, very useful not just to wipe sweat but when the mats are erm... a bit yucky. :p

This actually does look like my typical "place" in pump class. Haha...

Happy father's day, I hope all the gym daddies had enjoyed the cake - chocolate is very healthy!

Chocolate Cake with Froggies

Made this for sis's order. Her colleague's birthday and when I asked what topper, sis said her colleague's favorite is frog. Haha... I thought then, what an acquired taste!

Here are the lotus leaves.

And a pair of frogs. I hope I did okay on differentiating the girl and the boy.

Froggies on moist chocolate cake with milk chocolate icing.

Potato Salad

My potato salad is definately more delicious than my mashed potatoes. Haha... this is going onto The Tearoom menu later - potatoes, crabsticks, eggs and green peas in creamy mayo dressing.

Yao Yao's 2nd Birthday Cake

Clare has booked this date for her daughter's birthday cake very long time ago. She wanted the custard and lychee filling cake and particularly the sponge fingers because her little baby loves that when she saw the picture of one of my previous cakes. My original plan was teddy bear with the play square blocks but I've later received a request of starfish, octopus and fishes.

Here's my Nemo! There were not that much space on the cake and since the birthday message was also quite long, the animals have to be tiny.

And here it is, the "baby" octopus and the little starfishes. I hope they are cute enough, I'm not very good with ocean animals yet.

Here's the message from daddy and mommy, sooo sweet!

Final touch... a pink ribbon (edible) and pink flowers on the sponge fingers. Hmm... I think the ribbon might be nicer if it's at the bottom. And since I didn't want to use the edible glue, I used fresh cream but it's a bit "messy" because the fresh cream can be seen.

Clare is a very supportive customer and very accommodating too. I've changed pick up time a few times but she's okay with it. Thanks dear. This is also her 4th or 5th time ordering from me and she has also been introducing TeaRoom to her friends. :)
Ashley Yao Yao is a really cute little girl. She will always accompany mommy to pick up the cakes.

Happy birthday Yao Yao! I hope you liked the cake.

Post Wisdom Tooth Surgery Indulgence?

If you can indulge yourself at all after the surgery...

Sis had her wisdom tooth removed last year and had to "eat" her meals with straws for a few days. Yeah, so she was practically "drinking" her food down.

Made some chocolate mousse and this is a slight modification from my previous rich chocolate mousse. The previous version was pure dark chocolate and the result was really rich and thick mousse. As I wasn't sure if he had to "eat" the mousse with a straw, so I thought it's better to make something with lower consistency. This version is with added cream, still rich but softer.

The other thing sis recommended for post wisdom tooth surgery was mash potatoes. Of course minus the black pepper, this is was for me...

Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

It's strange... I actually love carrot cake but so far no request for carrot cake. My favorite used to be the one from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, but the carrot cakes don't seem to taste as good now a days. The one from San Francisco Coffee taste better, but I think they don't have raisins in the cake. Next would be the one from Dome, but... it's RM12 per piece. A bit pricey.

Finally, my colleague requested for a carrot cake for her birthday. This carrot cake has been customized to include white chocolate besides the standard walnuts (and for some, raisins). The cake is also very moist because I've added bananas.

The fun part was the "construction" of the 3D topper, a treasure chest. Decided on a wooden one with some leather looking straps because I don't have gold/ silver colour to achieve the metal looks. Here is the making...

Stuffed the box with loads of chocolate coins. Would have made the coins if I had gold colour, but these were actually more convenient and real. For the fun of it, I made a treasure hunt map. Okay, I actually have no clue how one map should look like.

Covered cake with cream cheese frosting. To save the hassle of smoothing the icing, I've just "weaved" them on... Ta Da! And here's the cake...

A Farewell Cake

My immediate boss recently left the company. He told us he's leaving because of some personal reasons which we all know what is one of those reasons. There is someone in this company whom we find very challenging to work with - to put it in a nice way.

Thought of making him a cake as his farewell present. Chose something with chocolate since he's quite a chocoholic - Mars Bar cheesecake with butterscotch and chocolate sauce. The cheesecake is encased in oreo biscuit.

These were my messages...

All the best and we really really miss you...

Cupcakes, Jo Ee's

I meant to post this earlier but was a bit busy with, erm... things.

This is Jo's second order and it kind of came in last minute, like 11pm on Thursday and requested for Saturday. Actually very short notice for me since I'm not yet full time haha... but Jo is a very special customer, she ordered 2 items from me the first time she ordered and we spent like weeks sending each other more than 70 Facebook message discussing the details of her cakes. Oh, the chocolate cake with "sau tou" was her order. And she had recommended another customer, Clare, who had ordered 3 times already. What do I do without these gals? :)

So of course I would really want to take her order. But sadly, I told her I won't have enough time to make a lot of 3D toppers. Anyways, I managed to at least made a pair of booties for her.

I hope they were not too disappointed with this box.

And Happy belated birthday Xuen Min, hope you've had a great 8th birthday celebration.

Oh, and a BIG thanks to Jo for your support!
